The anticipated Flaming Lips & Neon Indian collaborative 12” is finally here. However, as previously reported, the four-track EP is only available at two record stores in the U.S., and no plans have been announced for a wide release. The record is currently limited to 1,000 individually unique records pressed on special-colored vinyl, hand-picked by frontman Wayne Coyne.
Luckily, with the help of our trusty friend the internet, the entire EP can be streamed on YouTube. The previously leaked first track “Is David Bowie Dead?” streams on one clip while the rest of the songs stream on another.
A Yoshimi musical!?
“And now, frontman Wayne Coyne tells Billboard that the band has a bunch of other batshit projects in the works, including the long-in-the-works Yoshimi stage musical.
According to Billboard, the band is “in the early stages of production” on a stage musical with director Des McAnuff, the man behind Jersey Boys, as well as the Broadway adaptation of the Who’s Tommy. The musical will be the long-rumored stage version of the band’s 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, though it’ll also feature tracks from albums like The Soft Bulletin and At War With the Mystics. Coyne tells Billboard, “It’ll be a big chunk of Flaming Lips music, probably about 30 songs. It’s a big deal. It’s hokey and wonderful and poignant and powerful. It’s really become a perfect combination of my fantastical robot-world vision and [McAnuff’s] little, internal, humanistic version of what that music is. I really believe it could work— and luckily, I don’t have to do much!”
